Events Soul Of The City Tour
The Soul of the City: Elmwood Rises October 25th and 26th
Memphis turned 200 years old this year.
We invite you to meet the people who transformed it from a tiny trading post on the Mississippi River into a bustling metropolis of 650,000.
They were saints and sinners. Patriarchs and politicians. Suffragists, scoundrels, leaders of the Civil Right-movement. Lovers, epidemic victims, individuals like you and me.
Meet them all.
Join us Friday, October 25th or Saturday, October 26th for a tour like none other. We’ll open the gate at 4pm both nights, and you’ll be transported back in time shortly thereafter.
Tickets are available only online at EventBrite and will go on sale beginning the first week of August.
Have you ever taken Elmwood's 'costumed tour'? Well, this is that event...only better!
Tour takers will be greeted by costumed hosts as they walk over the bridge and into the cemetery grounds. Then, they'll meet 9 costumed characters representing historical figures as they stroll down winding carriage paths.
Guests will have the chance to peruse expanded retail options and purchase beer, wine, and snacks.
Here's how it works - please read this carefully:
Admission is available for tours that will begin within hour-long blocks of time. For instance, if you purchase 5pm block tickets, you should be inside the cemetery by 5pm, and your tour will begin before 5:45 pm. If you purchase 6pm block tickets, you should be inside the cemetery by 6pm and your tour will begin by or before 6:45 pm, and so on.
When you begin to choose the date and time you'd like to get tickets, make sure and scroll all the way down so that you see all of the options available to you!
Soul of the City event t-shirts are available! Pre-purchase your event t-shirt when you purchase admission and save over event-day prices. Simply add to your order and we'll have your t-shirt available for you to pick up at the event.
Parking takes place along S. Dudley Street. Security guards will be present on the street.
Questions about the length of the route and accessibility? Elmwood recommends that you call the office and speak with a staff member about it before your purchase, if so. Please call 901-774-3212 and Bob Barnett will help.
What should I wear to this? A Costume?
We recommend comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Sneakers, jackets, and jeans work well, but if a costume fits the bill, then by all means, wear it...and be prepared to be in a lot of photos!
Why does Elmwood sell tickets to this event?
Elmwood is one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in the state of Tennessee. The staff and volunteers create tours like this one to help support the maintenance of these historic cemetery grounds.
Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
No. All are welcome to this family-friendly event.
What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Cars park along S. Dudley Street for this event. Security will be present on the street. Handicap parking and sponsor parking will be made available also on S. Dudley Street.
What can I bring into the event?
This is an all-walking event and tour-takers will be on their feet an average of two hours. If you or your loved ones require mobility assistance, we recommend that you bring a walker, wheelchair, or scooter. There are not many places to sit along the tour route.
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Please contact us at 901-774-3212 or by email at historian [at] elmwoodcemetery [dot] org
What's the refund policy?
This is an outdoor event, and Memphis weather does not always cooperate. Elmwood Cemetery will cancel this event in the event of very inclement weather and refunds will be issued.
To be totally sure that an evening's event is still on, please check Elmwood's Facebook page. Calling the office the evening of the event will yield mixed results, and online is the best, most efficient way to check the status of these events.
