The Memphis Upstanders Tour

Civil Rights History at Elmwood.

Black Americans are not defeated, the civil rights movement is not dead. If anyone thinks that we are going to stop agitating, they had better think again. If anyone thinks that we are going to stop litigating, they had better close the courts. If anyone thinks that we are not going to demonstrate and protest, they had better roll up the sidewalks. --Rev. Benjamin L. Hooks

Join us for this 90 minute walking tour of the activists and agitators who lay at rest beneath our trees. You will visit civil rights activists, suffragists, political leaders, business people, and clergy on this tour. These are the people that stood up and made the world a better place - and they were from Memphis.

This tour begins at 12:00 pm on Saturday, May 8th. We will cover a great deal of the cemetery grounds on foot and excellent walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Masks are requested.

Advance registration is required by clicking on the link below or by calling 901-774-3212. $20 per person; all proceeds go to the maintenance of Elmwood Cemetery. Rain will cancel this tour - call the office for rain information.
